Re-bar

2000

Directed by Mark Gallagher
Musical Direction by Jill Wainsguard
Lighting Design by David Vercade

Hedwig and the Angry Inch, John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s genderqueer rock musical masterpiece premiered off-broadway at the Jane Street Theatre in 1998. It became an instant cult classic and the original production toured to LA and London.

The creators could not get a Broadway production mounted right away so they decided to give the rights to smaller repertory theaters and individuals. The first group to get the rights, before a film version of the show premiered, was director Mark Gallagher in Seattle.

Premiering in Seattle at the legendary gay music club and performance venue Re-Bar in November of 2000, the show as an instant sensation and local actor Nick Garrison became an iconic Hedwig for the ages.

Reviews

"Hedwig" gets a sharp, kinetic staging at Re-bar from Mark Gallagher, enriched by David Vercade's lighting. Jim Nelson, Steve Newton and Ben Ireland round out the strong house band. Also on hand is actor S.V. Rudinoff, whose nifty final contribution to the show should remain a surprise.

Misha Berson, The Seattle Times

“Garrison's amazing talent combined with the heartbreaking crooning of Sarah Rudinoff as Hedwig's "husband" Yitzak sent chills down my spine. I gave Hedwig the most honest and enthusiastic standing ovation since--well, ever.”

Adrian Ryan, The Stranger
